Frequently Asked Questions – Moderate Sedation Dentistry
At our clinic, we understand that visiting the dentist can be stressful for some patients. That’s why we offer
moderate sedation dentistry—to make your experience as calm and comfortable as possible.
1. What is moderate sedation dentistry?
Moderate sedation uses medication to help you relax during dental treatment. You’ll remain awake and
able to respond, but you’ll feel deeply relaxed and may remember little or nothing about the procedure.
2. Is moderate sedation the same as sleep dentistry?
Not quite. While some people refer to it as "sleep dentistry," moderate sedation keeps you conscious but
drowsy. You’re not fully asleep, unlike with general anesthesia.
3. Who is moderate sedation suitable for?
It’s ideal for patients who:
- Experience dental anxiety or fear
- Need extensive or complex dental work
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Have difficulty sitting through long procedures
- Have had past traumatic dental experiences
4. How is the sedation given?
We typically administer moderate sedation via IV (intravenous) injection, which allows for fast, precise
control over the sedation level during your appointment.
5. Is it safe?
Absolutely. Your safety is our top priority. Our trained and certified team will monitor your heart rate,
blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing throughout the entire procedure.
6. Will I still feel pain?
No. In addition to sedation, we use local anesthesia to completely numb the treatment area. You’ll be
relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure.
7. How long will the effects last?
You may feel drowsy for several hours after your appointment. Most patients need the rest of the day to
fully recover, so we recommend taking it easy afterward.
8. Do I need someone to accompany me?
Yes. You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours post-treatment.
9. How do I prepare for a sedation appointment?
We’ll provide full instructions before your visit. Typically, this includes:
- Avoiding food and drink for a certain period beforehand
- Disclosing your medical history and medications
- Arranging transportation in advance
10. Can I go back to work or drive after?
Not immediately. You’ll need to rest for the remainder of the day. You should not drive, work, or operate
any machinery until the sedation has fully worn off—usually by the next day.
